New free Twitch training – AWS Dev Hour: Building Modern Applications

Do you have the skills needed to build modern cloud applications that are designed and distributed for scale and agility? If you’re interested in learning to build cloud-native applications and architecture practices, join us for our newest Twitch series, AWS Dev Hour: Building Modern Applications. Presented by AWS Training and Certification, AWS Dev Hour is a free, eight-week show on AWS Twitch that kicks off on Thursday, January 28.

What is AWS Dev Hour: Building Modern Applications?

Built by developers, for developers, the series offers an interactive, fun, and hands-on approach that gives you the chance to learn by doing. Over the course of eight weekly episodes, AWS expert hosts Ben Newton and May Kyaw, both based in Australia, will take you through the end-to-end build of a serverless application in the AWS Cloud using the AWS Free Tier.

You’ll start building a modern, full-stack, cloud-native application in the AWS Cloud, and in each episode, you’ll get to code in real time alongside your hosts leveraging AWS Lambda, Amazon DynamoDB, Amazon API Gateway, the React library, authentication, Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3), Amazon Simple Queue Service (SQS), AWS CodePipeline, and more. Along the way, you’ll learn best practices for modern applications and better understand how AWS-Cloud-native applications differ from on premises.

Providing free skills training to learners globally

The new AWS Dev Hour: Building Modern Applications is part of Amazon’s commitment to provide free skills training to 29 million learners globally by 2025 through innovative offerings that meet learners where they are. This is the fourth training series produced for Twitch by AWS Training and Certification, following the success of AWS Power Hour: Machine Learning and AWS Power Hour: Cloud Practitioner (two shows) with thousands of viewers. AWS Dev Hour extends the interactive learning aspect for customers through the introduction of a continuous hands-on project to complete as they follow along in the series.

“Providing free access to technical skills training has been an important priority for us for many years. We know access to skills training can help unlock opportunities and have a positive, long-term impact for our employees, customers, and communities,” said Scott Barneson, director of Learning Products, AWS Training and Certification. “The AWS Dev Hour series provides a fun, interactive way for developers to get hands-on and learn how to build cloud-native applications—covering AWS Dev services, architecture, serverless, microservices, and DevOps. There is no better time or opportunity to increase your modern application-development skills.”

AWS Dev Hour host Ben Newton added, “AWS Dev Hour is more than just watching two Tim-Tam-slamming, Vegemite-toast-smothering, coffee-guzzling Aussie developers writing code. It’s project-based learning! We want to help enable future AWS Cloud developers in the community by building something together, from scratch! It’s going to be a journey, with a lot of fun (and laughter—likely at my code) along the way. I can’t wait!”

“I’m super excited to be part of the first AWS Dev Hour series!” added co-host May Kyaw. “There’s going to be a ton of hands-on coding, knowledge sharing for developers of all levels, and unique (and fun!) collaboration to build an app together with the AWS team. You don’t want to miss our first episode.”

Join us for episode one on January 28

You’ll meet our hosts during the premier episode on January 28th and then jump right into developing your application. We’ll start building right away, and you can join in the fun. In line with best practices, we’ll leverage infrastructure-as-code and define our application infrastructure using the AWS Cloud Development Kit (CDK).

Each weekly episode will livestream on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. PST on the AWS Twitch channel. Episodes will also be available on demand on Twitch after each livestream. The series is available in English.
