Since the launch of the AWS Canada (Central) Region in December 2016, Canadian customers have been building on AWS to help their organizations transform. Based on customer demand, we have continued to add new features and services into the Canada Region. We have launched 231 new features and services so far this year, demonstrating our commitment for continued growth in Canada.

Our Canadian customers came together to showcase their latest artificial intelligence (AI) applications using machine learning (ML) on AWS. At Amazon, we’ve been investing in machine learning technology for over 20 years. Our mission is to put machine learning in the hands of every developer and data scientist.

Shared Services Canada (SSC) is the central IT service provider of the federal government of Canada. It delivers infrastructure services related to email, data centers, telecommunications, and workplace technology devices for 43 federal agencies. Currently, they operate approximately 700 data centers running roughly 14,000 applications. To meet the future needs of the government, SSC plans to drive efficiencies and augment their computing capacity through data center modernization and consolidation, and the adoption of cloud computing between 2017 and 2024.

We are committed to enabling Canadian public sector customers to adopt cloud computing with confidence, while maintaining compliance with applicable privacy legislation. Recently, we supported efforts related to a Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) by BCNET, a large government cloud broker in the Province of British Columbia that supports over 40 educational institutions, used to assess and enable cloud adoption for sensitive data workloads in Canada.

Federation for Internet Alerts (FIA), the nonprofit whose mission is to get crucial alerts in front of the right people at the right time and place, recently received multiple Creative Media Awards for its life-saving technology. It’s also the second consecutive year that FIA has won the Shorty Social Good Award for Technology. And this is just the start.

The cloud enables organizations to achieve their missions faster, speed up innovation, and save costs by scaling up quickly without the lengthy and costly process of acquiring additional hardware. Although more public sector organizations are adopting the cloud for mission-critical workloads, misconceptions about vendor lock-in still exist.

We strive to meet our customers not only where they are now, but also where they want to be in the future. This requires constant innovation and rapid development of public sector solutions each year. In 2017, this took the form of the AWS Secret Region, achieving DoD Impact Level 5, and making AWS Educate available to students ages 14 and older – just to name a few highlights.

Fifty-one Las Vegas area students attended re:Invent to learn about cloud computing and how they can get involved with technology beginning with a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) educational path – and ultimately leading to a cloud computing career.

#GivingTuesday is a day devoted to giving back to the causes that we care about, the issues that define some of us, and the missions that drive solutions to some of the world’s most critical problems. This holiday season and beyond, we want to bring awareness to this day and explain how it affects nonprofit organizations that participate.

Startups around the world use AWS to protect capital by avoiding the purchase and maintenance of infrastructure. AWS provides public sector startups with the tools to address security, operations, and performance while enabling them to invent and scale at a faster rate. This increases their chances of commercialization with their first – and sometimes their only – shot at success.
