Amazon S3 reduces prices up to 31% for three storage classes

We are excited to announce that Amazon S3 has reduced storage prices up to 31% in three S3 storage classes, effective December 1, 2021. Specifically, we are reducing the storage price for S3 Standard-Infrequent Access and S3 One Zone-Infrequent Access up to 31% in 9 AWS Regions: Asia Pacific (Hong Kong), Asia Pacific (Mumbai), Asia Pacific (Osaka), Asia Pacific (Seoul), Asia Pacific (Singapore), Asia Pacific (Sydney), Asia Pacific (Tokyo), US West (Northern California), and South America (Sao Paulo). Along with the reduced cost of the S3 Standard-IA storage class, you’ll also receive the same reduced storage cost for objects in the S3 Intelligent-Tiering Infrequent Access Tier.

In addition, the S3 Glacier Flexible Retrieval storage class (formerly S3 Glacier) now includes free bulk retrievals and a 10% storage price reduction in all AWS Regions. With these updates, S3 Glacier Flexible Retrieval is now further optimized for use cases such as backup and disaster recovery, where you need to retrieve large amounts of data, without worrying about the costs.

Together, these changes help to further reduce your cost of S3 storage while benefiting from the simplicity, durability, and virtually unlimited scalability of Amazon S3.

AWS Free Tier Data Transfer Expansion

I also wanted to make you aware of a recent expansion of the AWS Free Tier for Data Transfer, which includes downloading from Amazon S3. Last week, Jeff announced that AWS expanded the Free Tier with additional data transfer out, as follows:

Data Transfer from AWS Regions to the Internet is now free for up to 100 GB of data per month (up from 1 GB per region). This includes Amazon EC2, Amazon S3, Elastic Load Balancing, and so forth. The expansion does not apply to the AWS GovCloud or AWS China Regions.

Data Transfer from Amazon CloudFront is now free for up to 1 TB of data per month (up from 50 GB), and is no longer limited to the first 12 months after signup. We are also raising the number of free HTTP and HTTPS requests from 2,000,000 to 10,000,000, and removing the 12 month limit on the 2,000,000 free CloudFront Function invocations per month. The expansion does not apply to data transfer from CloudFront PoPs in China.

This change is effective December 1, 2021 and takes effect with no effort on your part. As a result of this change, millions of AWS customers worldwide will no longer see a charge for these two categories of data transfer on their monthly AWS bill. Customers who go beyond one or both of these allocations will also see a reduction in their overall data transfer charges. As a reminder, Amazon S3 provides a Free Tier for 12 months up to 5 GB in the S3 Standard storage class, plus your first 20,000 Get Requests, and 2,000 Put, Copy, Post, or List Requests.
