Using artificial intelligence to help increase breast screening attendance

University Hospitals of North Midlands Trust’s Breast Care Unit approached Redmoor Health to discuss innovative ways to improve patient engagement. Turning to social media, the Health Innovation Campus at Lancaster University, Redmoor Health, and the National Health Service (NHS), began using Facebook to reach the at-risk demographic (women 49+ years old). Through this collaboration, they saw the number of patients attending vital breast screening appointments increase by 13% – among the best in the country.

Teaching machine learning through robot application development on AWS

Machine learning (ML) isn’t just for the technology industry. Today, machine learning influences research and consumer products and is leading to breakthroughs across industries like healthcare, manufacturing, finance, and retail. In the field of reinforcement learning, machine learning meets the real world when applied to robotics. Knowing this, how can we ensure students are skilled and prepared to leverage the power of this technology?

Estimating Hurricane Wind Speeds with Machine Learning

Better estimates of hurricane wind speeds can lead to better decisions around evacuations and general hurricane response planning, saving both lives and property. Hurricane windspeed estimates are currently made using the manual Dvorak technique. The National Hurricane Center releases them every three to six hours. Artificial intelligence (AI) experts with the IMPACT team at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center and Development Seed created the Deep Learning-Based Hurricane Intensity Estimator to automate this process.

From Bytes to Classrooms: How Technology and Data are Transforming Brazil’s Public Education

The educational problem in Brazil is the size of the country: enormous. Only 14% of students learn what they are supposed to learn in mathematics and only 30% in Portuguese by the end of middle school (ninth year). That means that only a small percentage of students exit middle school able to read the news […]

Automatically Discover, Classify, and Protect Your Data

In our post, Building a Cloud-Specific Incident Response Plan, we walked through a hypothetical incident response (IR) managed on AWS with the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL). With the recent launch of Amazon Macie, a new data classification and security service, you have additional controls to understand the type of data stored in […]
