Ibotta Saves $1 Million with Cloudability from AWS Marketplace

ibotta cloudability case study aws marketplaceIn this post, you’ll discover how Ibotta, a mobile shopping app that helps consumers save money by generating cash back on in-store and mobile purchases, used Cloudability from AWS Marketplace to automate its reporting on cloud usage. This helped to increase its coverage of Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) Reserved Instances by 20 percent and save the company more than $1 million.

Ibotta launched through Amazon Web Services (AWS) in 2011. Ever since, the cloud has played an essential role in the rapid growth for this consumer technology company. “Our early growth would not have happened without AWS,” says Ron White, vice president of engineering for Ibotta.

Managing that growth cost-effectively, however, was not easy for the company. Ibotta tracked Amazon EC2 instances and Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) spending manually through Excel spreadsheets. “Our AWS footprint really took off as we grew, but we struggled to gain visibility into our resource utilization,” White admits. Ibotta solved that problem with the help of Cloudability from AWS Marketplace. Cloudability’s software-as-a-service (SaaS) True CostTM cloud management platform helps to easily monitor, analyze, and optimize AWS spending.

Ibotta procured the Cloudability solution in just a few hours. “It is very easy for our customers to procure our solution in AWS Marketplace. All it takes is a few clicks, so customers can see the value of our solution much faster,” says Mat Ellis, founder and CEO of Cloudability. With Cloudability’s True Cost platform, Ibotta uses a simple point-and-click interface. As a result, Ibotta no longer needs to use spreadsheets to track and stay up to date on its AWS usage. “With Cloudability, we get fast, comprehensive reporting and analysis of our AWS spending across all our accounts,” says Scott Bassin, director of engineering for Ibotta.

Through the quick visibility into its AWS spending, Ibotta has boosted its coverage of Amazon EC2 Reserved Instances from 40 percent to 60 percent and purchased reserved capacity within Amazon DynamoDB, saving the company more than $1 million. Ibotta has used this win to enhance its infrastructure through other AWS solutions.

Ibotta is also improving its decision-making ability through Cloudability on AWS. “Cloudability enables us to make smarter decisions about the work we do, especially when it comes to data science,” says White. “For example, we can see how much AWS usage and cost is related to our data science work, which helps determine where and when to use data science. We are excited to see where both AWS and Cloudability take us in the future.”
