Creative collaboration and innovation on the schedule at The VIEW Conference 2023

Since the year 2000, Turin, Italy has been the home of the VIEW Conference, one of Europe’s most prominent computer graphics (CG) industry events. With a diverse lineup of professionals from creative fields including CG, animation, visual effects, and more, The VIEW Conference is a hub for innovation, collaboration, and inspiration. This year Amazon Web Services (AWS) is a Platinum Sponsor of the event, which is shaping up to be an unmissable gathering for artists passionate about pushing the boundaries of creativity.

Renowned speakers, visionary insights

The VIEW Conference consistently hosts a celebrated lineup of speakers including multi-Academy Award winners from animation and VFX films. Renowned industry figures sharing the spotlight have included Pixar Animation Studios Co-Founder Ed Catmull, Chief Creative Officer of Pixar Animation Studios Pete Docter, and co-founder of the Academy Award-winning studio Aardman Animations, Peter Lord. Each year industry luminaries like these share their invaluable insights and experiences.

Unveiling new perspectives

This year’s VIEW Conference program showcases a cross-section of international talent. The conference will also feature a special talk titled “Killers of the Flower Moon: Telling the Story with Sound,” delivered by Mark Ulano, the Oscar-winning sound engineer behind Martin Scorsese’s latest film, the release of which coincides with the conference. Speakers at the VIEW Conference 2023 include ten directors behind this year’s highest-grossing animated features, as well as a trio of directors of forthcoming releases. The keynote speech, “Old and New: How Star Wars Shaped My Art and Design,” will be delivered by Douglas Chiang, an Oscar winner and VP/Executive Creative Director at Lucasfilm. The conference will also feature production-side VFX supervisors from blockbuster films such as “Barbie,” “Oppenheimer,” and “Avatar: The Way of Water.” Leaders in diverse branches of media and technology encompassing AI, real-time rendering, game design, and immersive technologies round out the full roster of conference sessions.

AWS at the VIEW

From leveraging the cloud to connect talent and workflows globally, to empowering creators with open-source tools and embracing the newest frontiers in real-time rendering, AWS will engage in creative discussions throughout the week during three sessions:

Tuesday, October 17

  • 10:30-11:30, Fucine theatre: Keynote Presentation: Global Collaboration: A Creative Imperative
Exceptional artists exist everywhere, waiting for the opportunity to showcase their skills and contribute to projects that resonate with audiences around the world. How can the power of a truly global VFX studio – connected by the cloud – unify talent, workflow, and content creation from multiple locations across the world? Director of Visual Compute at AWS, Gretchen Libby, will explore a vision that shows how, by virtue of distributed workflows and teams – and bringing the best in any region to each project – the unified global studio is greater than the sum of its individual locations. Libby will be joined for this discussion by guest Sam Reid, CTO of Untold Studios.

Thursday, October 19

  • 10:15-11:15, Fucine theatre:  Open Source and the Future of the Creative Pipeline
Some of the most creative ideas in VFX and animation are born from collaboration – even collaborating on the tools we use to create. This is a key reason innovators at AWS believe in supporting, contributing to, and being active members of the open source community. The GM of Creative Tools at AWS, Antony Passemard, will lay out a vision for the projects that connect creators to their pipelines using the tools they want to use, and give a glimpse into how the Creative Tools team innovates to support best-in-class workflows of the future.
  • 15:15-16:15, Binario 3:  Real Time Animation for Feature Film
Real-time rendering is making a big impact, and for animation artists, the impact goes far beyond games. Today, real-time rendering is finding its way into design, visualization, and virtual production. GM of Creative Tools Rendering at AWS, Félix Duchesneau, will show how traditional feature animation workflows benefit from a real-time boost – just hit play, and see your scene come to life in 24fps. He’ll be joined in conversation with Epic Games Director, Media & Entertainment, Americas/EMEA Ben Minall. Andy Hayes, Sr. Visual Computing Solutions Architect at AWS will demonstrate how studios can accelerate feature animation projects by combining the real-time speed of Unreal Engine’s rendering with the scale of a render farm managed by AWS Thinkbox Deadline. Learn how to accelerate your feature animation project by combining the real-time speed of Unreal Engine’s rendering with the scale of a render farm managed by AWS Thinkbox Deadline.

We look forward to meeting you at the VIEW and learning how you use the cloud for creative storytelling. Many sessions during the VIEW Conference are also available with a virtual ticket. Learn more at the conference website.
