PUBLIC SECTOR INNOVATION
FOR A BRIGHT NEW FUTURE
Governments, education, healthcare and nonprofit customers across the UK are delivering some of the world's most exciting innovations - enabled by the AWS Cloud.
Rich in world-changing technologies, the UK is home for the innovative. AWS is proud to support this every step of the way.
Build a better Government in the cloud
Forrester Consulting researched European government plans, priorities, and challenges related to digital transformation to bring us new insights. Power your innovation through open data
When you choose to share data on AWS, you make it available to a large and growing community of innovators around the world - developers, startups, and enterprises. One of the most progressive examples of open data exists here in the UK.
Transport for London (TfL) manages the UK capital’s integrated transport network. By embracing open data on AWS, a community of 6,000 third-party digital developers developed new travel services for Londoners across hundreds of mobile apps.
Learn more about this and other city-wide innovation – including smart airports such as London City that’s both transformational and resilient to cyber-security threats in our transportation eBook.

Spotlight: Hackney Council
Using AWS, Hackney Council has modernised services to address housing challenges and improve the experience for residents and council staff.
Working with APN Advanced Consulting Partner Made Tech, the council developed a containerised infrastructure on AWS to simplify the way housing caseworkers access data. It developed a web-based interface and visual tools to help staff resolve issues faster and save hundreds of hours by automating simple tasks.
Matthew Cain, head of digital and data for Hackney Council, says, “With AWS and Made Tech, we’ve built intuitive digital services that are so good, people want to use them.”
Voice: the new frontier
For a long time, touch has been the primary interface through which we connect with online services, platforms, and information. But with voice technology, that’s changing.
Public sector organisations in the UK are embracing this game-changing innovation for life. Supporting the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency’s vision of the future, Amazon Alexa can tell drivers their current vehicle tax status and Buckinghamshire council is using the Alexa to let residents book waste collections, explore council tax payment options, and more.
Future of healthcare in the cloud
At the NHS Expo in 2018, UK Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Matt Hancock, shared the government’s vision for the future of the country’s innovation for life, as well as insights into pioneering technology trials. For example, Moorfield’s Eye Hospital in London is using artificial intelligence to help identify more than 50 eye diseases with an accuracy rate of 94%.
“Britain has the chance to lead the world on HealthTech. We already have some of the world’s best HealthTech companies … all bringing new innovations to UK patients and further growing the international reputation of our world-leading science and research base.”
The Rt Hon Matt Hancock MP
UK Secretary of State for Health and Social Care
What UK innovators are saying
“One of the biggest benefits has been allowing our digital team to experiment and deliver services faster. We are able to spin up test environments and get new features out quicker.”
Richard Holland, Solutions Architect at Age UK
“To do interesting things like figuring out how much energy users are saving with efficient appliances, you have to add more variables. With AWS, we will be able to scale to accommodate these increasingly massive datasets, supporting deeper insights.”
Nathan Cunningham, Associate Director at UK Data Service
“Using AWS gives us far more flexibility to set things up. It's a big benefit to us in terms of agility and being able to react quickly.”
Gary Ashby, Hosting Strategy Lead at National Rail Enquiries
“With AWS, we’re getting real insight into our supporters and for the first time can see which of our members also book holidays with us or use our online shop. This is transformational for us. As we start to truly understand our supporters better, we can more effectively anticipate their needs.”
Glen Yarwood, IT operations director at the National Trust
Seeking out new innovators
AWS re:Start is a training and job placement programme for the UK, launched by Amazon Web Services, to educate young adults as well as military veterans, reservists, and their spouses, on the latest software development and cloud computing technologies.
Working with QA Consulting, The Prince’s Trust, and The Ministry of Defence (MOD), the AWS re:Start programme will see 1,000 people from military or disadvantaged backgrounds given the knowledge and skills to jump start their career within the digital economy. Supported by AWS partners and customers, the programme will endeavour to find a work attachment for each of the 1,000 participants being trained.
How to buy on G-Cloud
The UK Government G-Cloud programme has changed the way public sector organisations can purchase information and communications technology. The G-Cloud Framework enables public bodies to procure commodity-based, pay-as-you-go cloud services on government-approved short-term contracts through an online catalogue called the Digital Marketplace.
Enabling innovation with AWS through the Digital Marketplace is simple, because we offer an easy-to-use process. And remember: with AWS, you only pay for what you use, with no up-front physical infrastructure expenses or long-term commitments.
