AWS positioned highest in execution and furthest in vision in the 2022 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Cloud Database Management Systems

AWS has been named a Leader for the eighth consecutive year in the 2022 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Cloud Database Management Systems, and this year we have been positioned highest for execution and furthest for vision. As we reflect on our recent re:Invent 2022 conference, we look forward to sharing this report which evaluates the top 20 data and analytics companies in the world. This recognition, in our opinion,  represents the culmination of 15 years of database innovation from a team of customer-obsessed builders who work tirelessly to redefine what’s possible with databases. And we are just getting started.

From our own pioneering experience operating our e-commerce business, we learned “one size doesn’t fit all” when it comes to databases. As our e-commerce business grew, we faced challenges like the ability to scale. We believed a better way had to exist—for us and for all database customers. Our builders started to think of the possibilities. This led us to deliver our first database in 2007, followed by the launch of our first fully managed MySQL database service, Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS), in 2009. In 2012, we expanded our portfolio with the launch of our first serverless database, Amazon DynamoDB, and the launch of an analytics database, Amazon Redshift. Our builders continued to dream of the possibilities and envisioned an open source–compatible database with the same performance as commercial databases but at 1/10th the cost. This led to the launch of Amazon Aurora in 2014, which is now trusted by hundreds of thousands of customers for their most demanding workloads.

In the ensuing years, we developed and launched new unique features for our existing services while we also built new databases. Throughout this journey, we have been obsessed with customer feedback, focusing our roadmap on delivering solutions that solve our customers’ most complex database problems. For our AWS database customers, our mission remains: helping our customers innovate by delivering cloud-based database services with a relentless focus on making advanced operational techniques accessible while transforming the economics of database ownership.

We are committed to delivering the operational excellence and performance—security, durability, availability, and reliability—that our customers have been accustomed to over the past 15 years. Additionally, our focus on the interoperability of our services will continue as we build additional integrations between our database services and other AWS services, such as analytics and machine learning. We continue to innovate as our builders are diligently developing new capabilities to set the bar on superior database performance. Amid delivering operational excellence, we are energized by the possibilities of inventing what was previously thought impossible.

At our annual 2022 re:Invent conference, we engaged with over 50,000 customers, sharing our latest innovations while carefully listening to their technology and business challenges to inform our roadmaps. We thank our customers for this Gartner recognition and will remain steadfast in inventing the next set of solutions to help our customers grow their businesses. The journey to the cloud and cloud-native databases is just beginning, and we are here to help our customers wherever they are in their journey.
