The First Street Foundation, a nonprofit research and technology group, is committed to making climate risk information accessible, simple to understand, and actionable for individuals, governments, and industry. As part of the Amazon Sustainability Data Initiative (ASDI), AWS invited Dr. Ed Kearns, the chief data officer of First Street Foundation, to share how AWS technologies and open data are supporting their mission to provide accurate and up-to-date information on climate related risks.

Technologies like the cloud can empower communities to prepare for and respond to the unexpected so that when a crisis hits, they can continue to advance. AWS works with customers and partners to build software solutions that improve government and nonprofits’ prediction, preparedness, response, and recovery capabilities—solutions that are being leveraged across Latin America and the Caribbean.

As consumption of materials continues to increase and competition for natural resources grows, building sustainable and resilient infrastructure is crucial in the fight against climate change. This is why AWS is launching the next AWS Sustainable Cities Accelerator cohort with a focus on infrastructure. The program empowers startups and leadership in the space to define, grow, and scale the cutting-edge solutions needed to solve today’s biggest infrastructure challenges. 

Today, AWS announced the startups selected to participate in the first AWS Defence Accelerator. The 10 finalists brought forward innovative ideas that will help the defence industry enhance its abilities to uncover actionable intelligence to support defence decision making, defend against cyber threats, and support making the defence industry more environmentally sustainable.

AWS announced the 10 finalists for the 2022 AWS Healthcare Accelerator focused on improving health equity. This year’s cohort brought forward innovative ideas that will improve access to care, provide actionable health equity data, expand access to medical transport, and help people without a home reach housing and health goals. Over the course of the four-week Accelerator program, these 10 startups will receive technical and business mentorship from AWS and KidsX experts, up to $25,000 in AWS Computing Credits, and collaboration opportunities with AWS healthcare customers, industry leaders, and members of AWS Partner Network (APN) looking for healthcare solutions.

AWS is committed to enabling the nonprofit sector with cloud technology tools and nonprofit-specific resources to help them innovate and expand their impact. The AWS IMAGINE Grant is designed to support nonprofits pursuing high-impact, innovative technology projects with vital financial and technical resources. Now in its fifth year, the program offers two distinct award categories for nonprofits to receive support based on their organizational goals and stage of their technology adoption journey. The United Kingdom (UK) government’s 2011 Skills for Life survey estimated that about 49% of UK adults had levels of numeracy—the ability to understand and use math in real-life situations—on par with primary school children. In response, National Numeracy, a nonprofit to help UK adults increase numeracy, was founded in 2012. Leveraging AWS, National Numeracy established a digital-first approach to engage UK communities with educational resources that help improve real-world math skills that can help them better manage their finances, find new job opportunities, assist their children in math, and more.

This year’s cohort of nonprofit winners of the Imagine Grant represents the biggest group of winners out of a record number of applications, each exhibiting a commitment to innovation and an insistence on the highest standards for the mission areas they serve. For the first time, this year’s Imagine Grant offered two distinct award categories, inviting nonprofits of all sizes to put forward both advanced technical projects in the Go Further, Faster award category and foundational IT projects in the Momentum to Modernize award category.

The AWS Cloud Credit for Research Program launched a new opportunity for Amazon Scholars and Amazon Visiting Academics to apply for AWS Promotional Credit to accelerate innovation through cloud technology. Amazon Scholars are world-class academics and Amazon Visiting Academics are pre- to newly-tenured academics, selected to tackle real-world technical challenges as they continue to teach and conduct research at their universities. AWS Promotional Credit is offered through this initiative is to support the awardees’ impactful university research that’s distinct from their work at Amazon.

Nonprofits have found themselves thrust into a digital-first landscape, with an increasing demand for virtual or remote services for beneficiaries, donors, volunteers, and staff. During the COVID-19 pandemic, nonprofit organizations put forth tremendous effort to fill gaps unmet by the government and private sectors for our communities. Nonprofits have shown agility in their pivot to online events, remote service delivery, sharing of data and research, and more. To help nonprofits access the best-in-class tools provided by AWS, today we are launching the 2021 AWS Imagine Grant program.
