How to build smart cities with FIWARE Orion Context Broker and Cygnus on AWS

Healthier Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care System (ICS) quickly scaled a platform on AWS to support the 1.8 million people in their region with Nexus Intelligence, an interactive health intelligence application with a suite of predictive models against various measures of need and health outcomes. Nexus Intelligence not only supported the ICS response to the pandemic, but is expected to help reconfigure and re-invest in services to improve the health and well-being of the population and reduce health inequalities.
Amateur radio meets edge computing to keep disaster response teams connected
In the immediate aftermath of a natural disaster, cell towers, power lines, and telephone and internet cable are often damaged or destroyed, limiting the ability for responders to share data and access the internet. The AWS Disaster Response team conducted a field testing operation designed to replicate a common disaster response scenario, to show how to establish an ad-hoc network at field sites with limited connectivity and create a link to an office headquarters to provide access to cloud-based resources and data to responders in the field.
Combating illicit activity by tracking flight data via the cloud
Many organizations including the intelligence community, security organizations, law enforcement, regulatory bodies, news organizations, and non-governmental organizations work together to disrupt transnational crime networks. Their missions include combating illicit trade; disrupting human, animal, and narcotics trafficking; detecting money laundering; and exposing political corruption. This community needs rapid analysis of large, diverse streams of information about air transportation networks, because air transportation is the fastest way to conduct illicit trade internationally. The nonprofit Center for Advanced Defense Studies (C4ADS) built the Icarus Flights application to meet this need. By building on AWS using managed cloud services, C4ADS spends less time and energy managing infrastructure, which frees them to focus on building innovative analytics and alerting services that their user community needs.
