The global shift towards clean energy has led to increased demand for electric vehicle (EV) batteries. This, in turn, has put the spotlight on the environmental and social impact of battery production and procurement.

Key raw materials for EV batteries such as lithium and cobalt are scarce resources, and the increased global demand for these has led to serious conflicts and community issues in the few regions that have these deposits.

Global markets are increasingly demanding socially responsible production, with a number of regional environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) regulations establishing policies for tracking raw material transfer in the supply chain.

The automotive industry requires a solution enabling supply chain risk monitoring to navigate opaqueness of supply chains through effective traceability mechanisms to comply with ESG requirements and societal expectations.

To address supply train transparency, Amplo Global has developed an artificial intelligence-led platform leveraging Amazon Web Services (AWS) to provide an end-to-end traceability in the production of EV batteries through ESG risk assessment capability.

This risk management platform enables businesses to create a transparent and resilient supply chain less prone to disruption. Amplo Global’ s solution, AmploFly4.0, is a cloud-based, AI-enabled ESG platform that reduces supply chain risk through simulation, benchmarking, and goal setting.

Amplo Global is an AWS Partner and AWS Marketplace Seller that’s an artificial intelligence-driven company committed to empowering organizations to model and address sustainability challenges in through design and data.

Solution Overview

The AmploFly4.0 platform helps customers across the EV battery supply chain track ESG risk and impact in accordance with several global frameworks, such as:

  • United Nations Sustainability Development Group (UNSDG)
  • Global Reporting Initiative (GRI)
  • Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB)
  • Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD)
  • Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRD)
  • Regional standards like LKSG for Germany (Lieferkettensorgfaltspflichtengesetz)
  • EU EV Battery Circularity Regulation

In this post, we will demonstrate the workflow using AmploFly4.0 for a global EV car battery manufacturing company.

Customer Opportunity

As part of its commitment to reach net-zero goals by 2040, an automobile manufacturing company is pivoting to supply 60% of its global output in EVs by 2028. The company has invested heavily in building EV production capacity by modernizing its manufacturing facility in multiple countries.

Consequently, developing a new supply chain supporting new production facilities leads to new social and environmental risks and requirements:

  • Upcoming European Union (EU) legislative initiatives require manufacturers to raise visibility into sustainability and ESG metrics.
  • Leading clean energy investors are demanding companies embed social management best practices in high-investment projects and report adequately.
  • Limited awareness within the company across functions/roles about how higher social risks can negatively affect business decisions downstream.

This combination of regulatory requirements, new supply chain paths, and new manufacturing plants in rapid succession has increased the probability of supply chain disruption risk.

Amplo Global Approach

Amplo Global helped the EV manufacturer build a resilient supply chain by:

  • Providing a platform to trace interdependencies across diverse stakeholders and personas by clarifying roles and impact to mitigate ESG risk (see Figure 1).
  • Pinpointing social risks.
  • Bringing together reporting tools to reconcile nuances in regional ESG reporting frameworks throughout global value chains.

The following key platform features helped AmploFly4.0 address the customer’s needs:

  • AI-driven heat maps and causals to score risk vulnerabilities in the supply chain, including simulating different supply chain scenarios to identify risk. Causals raise visibility of risk interdependency and how decisions affect outcomes further down the value chain (see Figure 2).
  • Key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics enabling production lifecycle transparency by tracking applicable ESG metrics such as worker health and safety, greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption, land degradation, and waste management (see Figure 3).
  • Dashboard to engage stakeholders and personas in the risk mitigation plan, in line with the client’s digital first strategy.

To help users connect and apply the platform at scale, AmploFly4.0 leveraged AWS services across infrastructure, native processes, data solutions, and AI services (see Figure 4).

Heatmap Comparisons for EV Battery Circularity Social Risk

To help the automotive company develop a robust supply chain strategy to meet its 60% EV target by 2028, a heatmap of current-state (Figure 2a) was generated to find high social risk areas in the supply chain during extraction of minerals for EV battery production.

Heatmaps score and rank the risk areas and lead to development of KPIs, leading to the co-creation of a risk mitigation strategy to basis the risks prioritized by AmploFly4.0 scores. As the automotive manufacturer implemented the risk mitigation actions and reviewed KPIs, heatmap scores shifted to show improvements in the overall supply chain risk exposure (Figure 2b).

KPIs and Dashboarding

AmploFly4.0 provided KPI aggregation across global and regional sustainability frameworks such as GRI, SASB, TCFD, GRC, and LKSG. This helped the client obtain a deep view into how supply chain decisions affects ESG regulation compliance to drive positive business outcomes across geographies.

Delivery at Scale Using AWS Solutions

AmploFly4.0 depends on several AWS services to drive the platform. Access and user sign-on is handled by Amazon Cognito, Amazon CloudWatch, and AWS IAM Identity Center.

AWS Glue provides an apparatus for combining data ingested into Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) from multiple sources, such as third-party vendors, customers, and the public domain data. AWS Glue also provides the extract, transform, and load (ETL) operations to create data warehouses.

Amazon QuickSight provides a business intelligence (BI) dashboard for data visualization and metrics tracking.

AWS-managed AI services augment Amplo Global’s proprietary AI and machine learning (ML) algorithms with pre-trained models. AmploFly4.0 leverages text and data extraction from scanned documents using Amazon Textract, acquires insights from unstructured text with natural language processing (NLP) using Amazon Comprehend, and predicts business metrics using Amazon Forecast.

AmploFly4.0 Features

The AmplFly4.0 platform helps businesses provide end-to-end supply chain visibility, transparency, and traceability and drives following results:

  • ESG reporting framework integration: AmploFly4.0 helps businesses embed ESG reporting into their flow of work. Since global and regional standards for different markets and industry sectors are already built in, this helps organizations align their current reporting approach with requirements of new markets they’re trying break into.
  • Pinpoint supply chain vulnerabilities: The traceability solution helps in tracking the movement of materials from mines to the finished product to end of life.
  • Stakeholder and data interconnection: AmploFly4.0 helps connect data between stakeholders across the value chain to assess, simulate, and introduce new scenarios in a controlled manner.
  • Tracking social risks: The platform tracks human safety and working conditions throughout the supply chain (mining sites, manufacturing plants, and transportation and logistics) to ensure exposure to hazardous materials and unsafe working conditions are reported. This leads to greater adherence to UN SDG goals.
  • Cost simulation: In identifying risk vulnerabilities, the platform is able to show direct costs associated with production halts (supply chain disruption, safety incidents) and indirect costs (unforeseen reputational and regulatory risks) through scenario simulations.

Conclusion

Organizations embracing AWS cloud-based platforms like AMploFly4.0 are witnessing significant bottom-line improvement by simulating ESG-led supply chain scenarios. This type of predictive scenario modeling drives top-line growth impact by making sure the business is ready to predict and face any type of supply chain challenge.
