Perseverance lands on Mars, cloud-ready to explore
AWS is helping NASA JPL reach an inaugural and innovative milestone in deep space exploration. On Thursday, February 18, NASA’s Mars Perseverance rover landed on Mars, after its 7-month, 300-million-mile journey from Earth. This is the first planetary NASA mission, with mission-critical communication and transfer of telemetry data in the cloud. During Perseverance’s mission on Mars, the science and engineering data will be processed and hosted in AWS, enabling the Mars 2020 mission to benefit from the scalability, agility, and reliability of the cloud.
Announcing the winners of the AWS City on a Cloud competition
We are excited to announce the winners of the 2020 AWS City on a Cloud competition. Since 2014, we’ve rewarded those who have positively impacted our communities in the City on a Cloud competition. This year, the competition expanded to include finalists from over 14 countries across the globe in search of how organizations are adapting to these unprecedented times and helping cities become more resilient. From building telehealth solutions during the COVID-19 pandemic, to improving farmers’ quality of life, to increasing computer science education, the winning cities and organizations went above and beyond to innovate for and with their constituents using the cloud. Six Singapore institutes of higher learning bring AWS courses and resources into diploma programs
AWS announced that six institutes of higher learning in Singapore—including all five national polytechnics and a private education institution—will bring AWS Cloud courses and learning resources into their diploma programs. By collaborating with AWS education programs, these institutions are developing the next generation of cloud professionals. The courses, which include the fundamentals of cloud computing, application development, and cloud security, are available now as part of the institutions’ diploma and short course programs.
AWS launches AWS GovTechStart to help GovTech startups
Today, AWS announced the launch of AWS GovTechStart, a new program intended to help early-stage commercial government technology (GovTech) startups build solutions on AWS for state and local governments across the United States. AWS GovTechStart is a virtual GovTech accelerator, modeled after AWS EdStart, that offers eligible companies support including access to equity-free AWS Promotional Credit, technical training and support, a community of GovTech experts, and more.
European research and education community can now access discounted cloud services faster through new agreement
GÉANT, one of the world’s largest research and education networks, is making it simpler to adopt cloud services through a new procurement framework, Open Cloud for Research Environments (OCRE Cloud Framework). GÉANT selected AWS Partners Jisc and Rackspace Technology to join the OCRE Cloud Framework.
Ushering in a new era of innovation in Greece – AWS office launches in Athens
AWS is announcing the opening of an office in Athens, furthering our commitment to investing in Greece and responding to the expanding customer base in the country. The office will support organisations of all sizes—startups, enterprises, and public sector agencies—as they make the transition to the cloud. The opening of the office is our latest investment in Greece.
Now available: The AWS Nonprofit Credit Program
Now available to eligible nonprofits: the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Nonprofit Credit Program. The AWS Nonprofit Credit Program provides nonprofits in the United States with $2,000 in AWS Promotional Credit that can be applied toward usage fees for AWS on-demand cloud services. Whether you are working to improve the performance of donor-facing websites, enhancing data practices through managed databases and analytics, propelling research through ML, or upgrading remote monitoring with IoT, AWS can help.
Amazon WorkSpaces supports CAC/PIV smartcard authentication
With a recent feature release, Amazon Web Services (AWS) customers can now use CAC/PIV cards when using Amazon WorkSpaces to access government systems. Amazon WorkSpaces is a desktop as a service solution that helps users access all of their desktop applications from anywhere. This feature supports pre-session and in-session authentication.
AWS Educate releases new cloud learning resources for students and educators
It’s a new year, which means it’s the good time for students to learn new skills for their future career. AWS Educate released five new learning resources and badges to jump start learning goals for students and make it simpler for educators to teach in a virtual or blended environment. The resources focus on robotics, innovation, and Amazon Honeycode.
New re:Invent sessions for the public sector coming this month
AWS re:Invent 2020 is not over. Additional content will be released January 12-14, 2021 including more than 200 new no-cost, virtual sessions. In the public sector track, watch five new sessions this January on topics from preparing for ransomware to designing AI and ML applications. Hear from customers like the United States Census Bureau and Capella Space in sessions aired first in Americas, then in Asia-Pacific, and finally in EMEA – all available later on demand.
