OpenFold, OpenAlex catalog of scholarly publications, and Capella Space satellite data: The latest open data on AWS
The AWS Open Data Sponsorship Program makes high-value, cloud-optimized datasets publicly available on AWS. Our full list of publicly available datasets are on the Registry of Open Data on AWS and are now also discoverable on AWS Data Exchange. This quarter, we released 15 new or updated datasets including OpenFold, OpenAlex, and radar data from Capella Space. Check out some highlights from the new or updated datasets.
New research shows EU and UK healthcare sectors could save 14.4 billion euros with AWS
The AWS Cloud Economics Centre published a new analysis that identified 14.4 billion euros in potential information technology (IT) savings across the European Union and United Kingdom healthcare sectors over the next five years—the equivalent of 5,665 euros per hospital bed—through the digital transformation of IT systems by migrating to the cloud.
Creating access control mechanisms for highly distributed datasets
Security is priority number one at AWS. Data stored in Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) is private by default. However, some datasets are made to be shared. In this blog post, we cover the no-cost mechanisms data providers can utilize to create access control policies for their highly distributed open datasets.
How KHUH built a long-term storage solution for medical image data with AWS
King Hamad University Hospital (KHUH) and Bahrain Oncology Center is a 600-bed-hospital in Bahrain. Over the years, KHUH faced constraints with exponential growth of their on-premise storage needs, particularly with the medical images stored by their picture archiving and communication system (PACS). KHUH turned to AWS to develop a cost- and time-effective long-term storage solution, without making changes to their existing PACS, that reduced storage costs by 40%.
Enhance operational agility and decision advantage with AWS Snowball Edge
In a data-dependent world, success belongs to the side with decision advantage: the ability to acquire data and make sense of a complex and adaptive environment, and act smarter and faster than the competition. Understanding global environments requires more than just more data – it requires live two- and three-dimensional maps, new support tools, improved processes, seamless connectivity, and better collaboration that can scale to the needs of the environment. This blog post explores how to address challenges of big data and accelerate time to data insights with machine learning with AWS Snowball Edge device deployment at the edge.
Move data in and out of AWS GovCloud (US) with Amazon S3
Increasingly, AWS customers are operating workloads both in AWS GovCloud (US) and standard AWS Regions. Dependencies between workloads, changing data controls, or enrichment of data across multiple data levels are examples of business needs that may require moving data in and out of AWS GovCloud (US). In this blog post, I explain how to move data between Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) buckets in the AWS GovCloud (US) and standard partitions.
How Natural Resources Canada migrated petabytes of geospatial data to the cloud
Since 1971, Canada Centre for Mapping and Earth Observation (CCMEO) at Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) has accumulated an Earth observation (EO) data archive in excess of two petabytes (PB). NRCan wanted to modernize its geospatial offerings at a faster pace, so they turned to the AWS Snow Family on AWS to migrate their large volume of data.
Street-scale global maps, orca sounds, and COVID-19 detection data: The latest open data on AWS
The AWS Open Data Sponsorship Program makes high-value, cloud-optimized datasets publicly available on AWS. We work with data providers to democratize access to data by making it available to the public for analysis on AWS; to develop new cloud-native techniques, formats, and tools that lower the cost of working with data; and to encourage the development of communities that benefit from access to shared datasets. This quarter, we released 19 new or updated datasets like validated OpenStreetMap data, bioacoustic data, COVID-19 detection data, and more.
Singapore’s IHiS scales vaccine operations with AWS to meet evolving on-the-ground requirements
To support Singapore’s national vaccination program, the Integrated Health Information Systems (IHiS) needed the capability to scale its systems to sustain significantly higher loads at very short notice. In addition, its teams needed to be able to develop and implement new features at speed to address evolving vaccination policies and changing, on-the-ground requirements. The agency turned to Amazon Web Services (AWS).
Preserving the history and language of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation using AWS
Oregon and Washington are home to the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR)—a union of the Cayuse, Walla Walla, and Umatilla tribes. Their language, Sahaptian is classified as severely endangered by UNESCO. CTUIR was searching for a way to preserve legacy knowledge in a way that can be passed down to future generations and strengthen its community. To do this, CTUIR worked with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and AWS Partner Dan Ryan to build an online dictionary of the Sahaptian language, powered by the cloud.
