May is Military Appreciation Month, providing an opportunity to recognize and show our appreciation for the US armed services and the important role they play in protecting and preserving our national security. The month includes celebrations and moments to recognize those in and out of uniform, as well as those that have and continue to serve. AWS is committed to supporting our veterans, active duty military, and military spouses. As we begin Military Appreciation Month, we are sharing progress made on our programs and efforts to support the military community.

Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), operator of Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru (BLR Airport), announced it will establish a Joint Innovation Center (JIC) with AWS and Intel to drive the development and adoption of digital solutions in aviation. This is the first JIC dedicated to advancing the aviation industry.

Latin America is set to achieve gender parity in 69 years, according to the latest World Economic Forum (WEF)’s Global Gender Gap Report. The same report shows that women experience a bigger gender gap in fast-growing fields like cloud computing, where women represent 25% or below of the workforce. At AWS, we believe that to address this challenge, we must give individuals around the world, from all backgrounds, the opportunity to develop cloud skills and begin promising careers in technology. To better understand the rapidly evolving workforce landscape and help our customers address barriers to digital skilling, AWS commissioned the strategy and economics consulting firm AlphaBeta to examine the skills needs of organizations across Australia, India, Indonesia, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, and South Korea. In this blog post, we outline key insights from the report, “Building Digital Skills for the Changing Workforce,” and provide examples for how governments, employers, training providers, and the technology industry can come together to meet this challenge.

At AWS, we know these are challenging times and we remain committed to supporting nonprofits. This blog post outlines a sampling of programs and resources for nonprofits, including grants and credits, open data access, cloud training, educational events, and more, designed to enable organizations of all sizes to overcome barriers to technology adoption, while enhancing the scale, performance, and capabilities of mission operations.

The Asia Pacific and Japan (APJ) region is riding a wave of innovation, which relies heavily on a digital workforce equipped to meet the rising demand for cloud computing. Today, AWS announced that we have trained more than two million people across APJ with cloud skills in the past decade. To accelerate this, we launched AWS Skill Builder, a digital learning experience available in more than 200 countries and territories, which will provide free skills training to millions of people around the world, in addition to other training programs.

Earlier this year, Amazon pledged to hire 100,000 veterans and military spouses by 2024. This is an increase of our previous commitment to hire 25,000 veterans and military spouses by 2021—a goal we’ve already surpassed, with about 40,000 currently working for Amazon. At AWS, we are committed to developing and hiring veterans and their spouses into roles focused on STEM. Check out the multiple programs, trainings, and resources available for veterans and spouses.

To help empower nonprofits to become data-driven organizations, Amazon Web Services (AWS) launched a pilot program for charities and nonprofit organizations in Canada called AWS DigiNPO. AWS DigiNPO is a program designed to raise awareness of the cloud as a tool for charities and nonprofit organizations to more effectively deliver community-centric services and identify new opportunities for innovation and growth.

Idaho Governor Brad Little announced an initiative between AWS and the Idaho STEM Action Center that will support instructors through training and professional development to teach cloud computing courses throughout the state. The collaboration will provide Idahoans an opportunity to reskill or upskill in high demand cloud computing courses and certifications, and support the local economy by filling high demand cloud computing jobs with local employers.

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development (DWD) has been focused on preparing  citizens for the growing tech, IT, and cloud industries. Collaborating with Ivy Tech and Amazon Web Services will help reach more learners and accelerate economic growth by fueling the state’s tech industry with skilled talent.
