By Jeff Miers, Director, Partners & Alliances, Energy IBU – AWS
By Laila Chatelain, AWS Competency Program Manager
The Energy Information Administration (EIA) expects global energy demand to increase by as much as 47% in the next 30 years, driven by population and economic growth, especially in developing countries.
At Amazon Web Services (AWS), we are committed to supporting the global energy industry in safely meeting the energy demands of the world today, while accelerating the industry’s transition to a more balanced and sustainable energy future.
AWS is optimistic about the future of the industry, which has a long history of innovating in order to address the ever-growing demand for energy in a responsible way. To meet the rising demand for innovation, the energy industry is accelerating technology adoption such as cloud computing, Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML).
AWS Partners play a vital role in these efforts by supporting customers worldwide and building, implementing, and integrating technology that help to reduce capital and operating costs while driving efficiencies in the operation of oil and gas assets, and furthering the development of a sustainable renewable asset portfolio.
We are excited to announce the AWS Energy Competency Program, which differentiates highly specialized AWS Partners who have demonstrated technical expertise and repeat customer success. These partners enable energy producers worldwide to build and operate assets efficiently and safely, while working to transition to a lower carbon world.
We are also excited to formally introduce 32 launch partners who worked with us this year to develop this incredible new program for energy partners and customers around the world.
AWS Competency Partners Have Proven Customer Success
The AWS Competency Program recognizes AWS Partners that have demonstrated technical proficiency and proven customer success in specialized solution areas, industry verticals, or workloads. It’s one of the toughest designations an AWS Partner can achieve, and requires partners to undergo a rigorous technical validation related to energy industry-specific best practices.
An example of the work AWS Energy Competency Partners are delivering to customers is Slalom, a global consulting firm focused on strategy, technology, and business transformation in 41 markets around the world.
TC Energy, a major North American energy company and Slalom customer managing 44,000 kilometers of pipelines and transporting 13 billion cubic feet of natural gas a day, partnered with Slalom to develop a business intelligence application that uses machine learning to help customers optimize gas scheduling and throughput. Through this system, TC Energy can now maximize capacity from existing systems to serve customers’ needs immediately.
Another great example is Unleash Live, a leading AI video analytics platform provider. Their customer, Worley, is an industrial engineering solutions company providing operations and maintenance services for assets including wind farms, solar parks, distributed energy systems, hydropower, and renewable natural gas projects. For Worley, conducting inspections at scale as assets age is a challenge. Worley utilizes Unleash Live to leverage drones and computer vision for inspections.
The Unleash Live computer vision models are designed to detect and grade up to nine different types of defects, providing engineers with a cost-effective way of performing many inspections without the need for expensive manual review. Benefits of using this technology include a reduction in cost and resources for inspections, as well as increased safety of people.
