NHS Digital launched NHS login, a serverless identity platform to facilitate access to a range of health and care apps for residents in England, with AWS, amongst other suppliers. Using the AWS Cloud, NHS Digital achieves scale, high availability, and security for citizens accessing these services, and helps users access NHS services quicker and more simply. NHS login is one of a number of services NHS Digital are hosting on the cloud as part of the UK government’s ‘Cloud First’ policy.

As government services around the world become increasingly digitalized, digital ID systems — many running on the cloud — are a critical part of these digital transformations. In this post, we dive deep into how these digital ID systems are strategically designed around a common vision, and how the cloud can help.

As organizations mature in their cybersecurity capabilities, they are looking to try and leverage automation to reduce the operational burden of alerting, detecting, and responding to threats. The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security (CCCS) added more AWS services to its assessment of the AWS Canada (Central) Region, bringing the total number of assessed AWS services to 120. This provides Canadian public sector customers additional confidence that AWS Cloud services meet the Government of Canada’s security control requirements. Using these services in conjunction with the deployment of the open source AWS Secure Environment Accelerator (ASEA) solution reduces cloud service configuration time from months to days.

Tessitura Network, a member-owned nonprofit company, provides customer relationship management (CRM) technologies and services to performing arts, cultural, and entertainment organizations around the world. Tessitura integrates what used to be disparate components of running an arts and culture organization, and supports organizations to gain a full picture of their customers and patrons, to segment and analyze data for insights, and to build personalized engagements with donors and communities they serve—all using the cloud and Amazon Web Services (AWS).

In the Greater Stockholm Area, SL (Stockholm Public Transport) is responsible for public transport services for more than three million citizens. SL is transforming their ticketing system with a new, “future-proof” alternative built and managed in-house. This major digital transformation project, built on the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud and using microservices, is currently being rolled out across the city. The new ticketing system is an integral part of SL’s commitment to make sure everyone who lives, works in, or visits Stockholm, “has access to well-developed, easily accessible and reliable public transport.”

Since its launch in June of 2019, the Authority to Operate on AWS (ATO on AWS) program has supported more than 300 US-based customers to meet their regulatory, security, and compliance requirements on AWS. To extend that support globally, Amazon Web Services (AWS) launched the Global Security and Compliance Acceleration (GSCA) initiative. The GSCA is now available to support customers in the United Kingdom (UK) and the European Union (EU).

The Japan Digital Agency (DA) has selected Amazon Web Services (AWS) as one of the cloud service providers that support Government Cloud, which delivers common cloud infrastructure that central government agencies, local governments, and other government organisations can use. As a cloud services provider directly contracted with the DA, AWS will help the Japanese government modernize IT by directly offering advanced technologies and global best practices to help customers innovate securely at pace.

As governments around the world digitize services, individuals are required not only to prove their identities, but to do so on digital channels. This is a challenge not only for people without legal ID, but also for individuals with ID documents that are hard to use digitally. Cloud-based digital ID systems can be a solution to this challenge. Plus, digital ID creates a robust scope of benefits — and cloud-based approaches to implementing these systems provide the speed, scale, and security needed for digital ID to succeed.

In this blog post series on getting started building a data lake for healthcare with AWS, I focus on improving the security posture of our example build by incorporating the relatively new Attribute Based Access Control (ABAC) feature of Amazon Cognito. This helps to both streamline and improve the granularity of access control for various user profiles connected to our data lake scenario.
