AWS Sample Integrations for Atlassian Bitbucket Pipelines

by Josh Campbell | on | in APN Competencies, APN Competency Partner, APN Partner Highlight, AWS Partner Solutions Architect (SA) Guest Post, DevOps on AWS | | Comments

Today, APN Partner and AWS DevOps Competency Partner Atlassian announced the beta of Bitbucket Pipelines, which allows customers to trigger build, test, and deploy actions every time they commit code to Bitbucket Cloud. Bitbucket is a source code control service that hosts Git and Mercurial repositories. Here at AWS, we have built a number of sample integrations to demonstrate how customers can use this new feature to deploy their code changes from Bitbucket to update their running applications on AWS.

As an example, customers can now deploy functions to AWS Lambda, Docker containers to Amazon EC2 Container Service, or an application to AWS Elastic Beanstalk, all by simply pushing code to a Bitbucket repository. Take a look at sample configuration scripts on Bitbucket to get an idea of how you can take advantage of this new Bitbucket functionality and automate code deployments to your AWS applications.

Using Atlassian Bitbucket Pipelines with AWS

You can easily enable Bitbucket Pipelines on a Bitbucket repository by choosing a new icon in the menu bar.  The commits page in your repository will also have a new column called “Builds” where you can see the result of the Pipelines actions that were run on that commit. The Pipelines page shows further information about the commits.

Once you enable Bitbucket Pipelines, you’ll need to include a YAML configuration file called bitbucket-pipelines.yml that details the actions to take for your branches. The configuration file describes a set of build steps to take for each branch in Bitbucket. It provides the flexibility to limit build steps to certain branches or take different actions for specific branches. For example, you might want a deployment to AWS Lambda step to be taken only when a commit is made on the “master” branch.

Under the hood, Bitbucket Pipelines uses a Docker container to perform the build steps. You can specify any Docker image that is accessible by Bitbucket, including private images if you specify credentials to access them. The container starts up and then runs the build steps in the order specified in your configuration file. One thing to note is that creating your own Docker image with all required tools and libraries for your build steps helps speed up build time.

The build steps specified in the configuration file are nothing more than shell commands that get executed on the Docker image. Therefore, you can run scripts, in any language supported by the Docker image you choose, as part of the build steps. These scripts can be stored either directly in your repository or in an Internet-accessible location such as Amazon S3. To support the launch of Bitbucket Pipelines, AWS has published sample scripts, using Python and the boto3 SDK, that help you get started on integrating with several AWS services, including AWS Lambda, AWS Elastic Beanstalk, AWS CodeDeploy, and AWS CloudFormation. You can try these samples out with three easy steps:

  1. Copy the Python script into your repository.
  2. Incorporate the bundling and execution of the script in your YAML configuration file.
  3. Configure any environment variables required by the scripts.

Detailed instructions on how to use these samples are specified in the README file in their repositories.  More information on using Bitbucket Pipelines can be found in Atlassian’s official documentation.

2016 AWS Partner Summit Singapore – Recap

by Kate Miller | on | in APN Competencies, APN Consulting Partners, APN Partner Highlight, APN Technology Partners, ASEAN, AWS Events, AWS for Windows, AWS IoT, AWS Marketing, AWS Marketplace, AWS Training and Certification, Big Data, Big Data Competency, Cloud Managed Services, DevOps on AWS, Migration, Networking, SaaS on AWS | | Comments

Last Friday, the AWS ASEAN partner team hosted the AWS Partner Summit – Singapore. The event was intended to provide partners with valuable insight into key trends on AWS, and to help partners to connect with both one another and with AWS team members. I was fortunate enough to be a part of the event, and had a great opportunity to connect with a number of consulting and technology partners from across the region. Similar to the Partner Summit – Sydney, the event featured guest speakers from AWS, APN member firms, and AWS customer firms.

Partner Keynote

Cam McNaught, Head of ASEAN Channels & Alliances kicked off the event. He was joined by Terry Wise, WW VP of Channels & Alliances, AWS, who spoke to partners about what we’ve seen to be some keys to partner success on AWS, which include:

Terry also discussed key trends representing a large opportunity for Partners on AWS, and Premier Consulting Partner BlazeClan took the stage to discuss a successful cloud migration the company completed for a large company in region.

Sessions

Three sessions were hosted across different topics:

  • Succeeding with AWS by Delivering High Value Services, presented by Darren Thayre, AWS Professional Services
  • Building a Big Data and Analytics Practice – Partner Opportunities with AWS, presented by Craig Stires, Head of Big Data and Analytics, APAC
  • Beyond the Fridge: Every Thing Will Be Connected, presented by Dr. Werner Vogels, CTO, Amazon.com

The sessions featured guest speakers from Seaco and Trax. One of my favorite quotes came from ‘Succeeding with AWS by Delivering High Value Services’, when Brandon O’Neill, Director of IT Services, Seaco, explained what the company was looking for in a partner: “We were looking for a mentor to help guide us onto the cloud”.

AWS Partner Recognition

The ASEAN team chose to recognize three APN Partners in three different categories: AWS Rising Star Partner, AWS Innovation Partner, and AWS Partner of the Year ASEAN 2015. Congratulations to the following APN Partners!

Networking

I loved one of the main approaches the team took to bring partners together. Throughout the event, folks had the opportunity to grab coffee…but they couldn’t grab just a single coffee. Coffees were paired together, and partners were meant to grab two coffees and then ‘partner up’, share the coffees, and strike up a conversation. The team also set up networking booths in the main hall for partners to learn more about key AWS services and programs, including AWS Partner Marketing and AWS Training & Certification.

Let’s Innovate Together on Behalf of Customers – Join the APN

by Dorothy Copeland | on | in APN Channel Reseller Program, APN Competencies, APN Consulting Partners, APN Technology Partners, MSPs on AWS | | Comments

Editor’s note – our team had great conversations with a number of companies yesterday at the AWS Chicago Summit who were interested in learning more about becoming a member of the AWS partner ecosystem, and the journey of our top partners. Today, we want to share with you the perspective of Dorothy Copeland, Director of Global Partner Programs for AWS, on joining the APN and growing your business as an APN partner.

People often ask me why they should partner with AWS.  The answer is simple:  You want an exceptionally successful cloud business. We want to support you along the way. Whether you’re building software solutions on AWS or providing consulting services regarding AWS, we invite you to come join us, and provide additional value to your customers around the globe.

With tens of thousands of members worldwide, the AWS Partner Network (APN) is focused on providing a great APN partner and customer experience.  Companies of all sizes around the world work with us at all stages of their cloud solution and services development, whether looking to AWS to help provide technical guidance in building their solutions, or to engage in joint go-to-market. Becoming an APN partner can help you shorten customer sales cycles, and give customers budget and time to spend on other initiatives. It can enable you to move more quickly and offer your customers global solutions, provide you with on-going revenue streams, and enable you to build innovative solutions and services up the stack to solve customers’ business needs, all on top of the agile, cost-effective, and scalable AWS platform.

We consider joining the APN as the start to your journey, and we want to help provide you with best practices as you grow your business. As you get started as a member of the APN, take advantage of the APN web portal, APN partner-focused white papers, and webcasts. I encourage you to ensure your entire cloud-focused team takes advantage of our free online Business, Technical, and TCO and Cloud Economics accreditation courses as pertinent to each individual’s role. Getting your technical employees AWS-trained and certified is of paramount importance to your success as an APN member, and our training team has made available a wealth of resources for you. I recommend you download the APN Partner Learning Plan to get started.

As your AWS-based business matures, you can qualify to become an APN Standard or higher-tier Technology Partner or Consulting Partner, where you’ll become eligible for a number of additional benefits. One of the key benefits in becoming a higher-tier APN Partner is qualifying to apply for APN Partner Programs. I recommend you think about the APN Partner Programs that make sense for your business model. Consider joining the Channel Reseller Program, for instance, if you are a Consulting Partner and value owning your customers’ experience from end-to-end. Do you plan to deliver applications via software as a service (SaaS) on AWS? Take advantage of the AWS SaaS Partner Program. As you become an Advanced Partner, we will validate your offerings through third-party audits as a part of the approval process to join the Managed Service Provider Program and the AWS Competency Program. We will help enable you to market your solutions on our Partner Directory and Competency Solutions webpages.  As you grow your business and want to engage in go-to-market with us, you can qualify for co-marketing funds and customer proof of concept funding to help you engage more quickly with customers and win new opportunities faster.

Business Model Transformation on AWS – Wipro, the New AWS Partner Success Story

by Kate Miller | on | in APN Competencies, APN Consulting Partners, APN Partner Highlight, APN Partner Success Stories, MSPs on AWS | | Comments

Today, we’d like to highlight our newest AWS Partner Success Story featuring Wipro, a Global Systems Integrator, Premier APN Consulting Partner, AWS Managed Service Provider, and AWS Life Sciences Competency Partner.

Headquartered in Bangalore, India, Wipro is a global IT consulting and system integration services firm that develops and implements solutions for enterprises across the globe. Wipro partners with more than 900 of the Fortune 1000 enterprises, and its 160,000-plus employees work in 67 countries. The organization operates more than 55 Centers of Excellence for emerging technologies, through which it takes advantage of the latest technology to deliver business capabilities to customers in financial services, manufacturing, technology, retail, consumer goods, healthcare, and media.

In the mid-2000s, an increasing number of Wipro customers started looking at new, more cost-effective approaches to consuming IT services. The cloud quickly emerged as one of those approaches. “Our customers wanted to move away from up-front capital expenses, and that really drove the trend toward IT as a service,” says Dr. Manish Govil, Global Cloud Alliances Head, Wipro. “Also, our customers wanted to bring services to market faster, and the agility and flexibility of the cloud enable that. We sensed that trend early on.”

Because its customers continued to express interest in the cloud as a business enabler, Wipro knew it needed to create a new strategy based on the development of software as a service (SaaS) solutions. “We had to develop a completely different business model to meet the demand for cloud offerings,” Govil says.

As an APN Partner, Wipro has been able to transform its business model. “By working as an APN Partner, we can be an innovation partner to our customers. We can now offer services we weren’t able to offer before,” says Govil. “We can structure our offerings as a service as a result of working in the cloud. We don’t have to manage our own data center infrastructure, so we have the flexibility and agility to release our services and solutions to market faster.”

Improving the Reader Experience: The Globe and Mail, ClearScale, and AWS

by Kate Miller | on | in Amazon DynamoDB, APN Competencies, APN Consulting Partners, APN Partner Highlight, AWS Case Study, DevOps on AWS, Digital Media | | Comments

We recently announced that we’ll be opening an AWS Region in Canada in the coming year. Today, we’d like to share the story of The Globe and Mail, a Canadian customer already taking advantage of the benefits of the AWS platform, with the help of Premier APN Consulting Partner ClearScale. The company is also an AWS Big Data, DevOps, Marketing & Commerce, and Mobile Competency holder. ClearScale helped The Globe build an article recommendation engine on AWS.

“ClearScale was introduced to The Globe and Mail by one of the Amazon Web Services (AWS) representatives. We were more than impressed by a publication with a 170-year history looking to develop a cutting-edge recommendation engine for their mobile application,” explains Pavel Pragin, CEO, ClearScale. “The Globe & Mail was interested in a reliable cloud services partner that could deliver an innovative and reliable solution. ClearScale’s solution helped The Globe & Mail expand their readership and gain additional advertising opportunities while meeting their tight project deadlines.”

Who is The Globe and Mail?

The Globe and Mail is Canada’s most read newspaper with a national weekly digital readership of 4.7 million. In print for 170 years, the newspaper delivers coverage of national, international, business, technology, arts, entertainment, and lifestyle news.

Why did The Globe and Mail engage AWS?

The Globe and Mail was planning to launch a new application that enables its growing online readership to access stories and breaking news from mobile devices. And to increase reader engagement, it wanted to serve up targeted articles based on each reader’s individual interests. The Globe team considered building a custom system on premises, but concluded that hosting its article recommendation engine in the cloud would be faster and would provide greater flexibility for testing different algorithms. The Globe team had already been prototyping a number of recommendation algortithms on AWS. Having had a great experience, the team decided to use AWS for its official platform. The Globe uses a number of AWS services, including:

What are the benefits for The Globe and Mail?

By building its personalized recommendation system on AWS, The Globe has experienced a number of benefits:

  • The team was able to get the service to market in just three months, less than half the time it would have taken had the newspaper built an on-premises solution
  • The Globe has obtained a flexible platform for testing, allowing the company to improve its mobile app over time
  • The Globe is dramatically increasing reader engagement; initial results show that parts of the mobile app that promote a personalized selection of articles based on the recommendation engine are seeing a 25% greater click-through than a selection of the current most popular articles that would otherwise be the top performers
